I had the amazing fortune of being invited to Art Battle and meeting Allen the Official, Chairman and leader at Healthy Hood Chicago. The connection was instant and energetic. The knowledge and love he emits is so informed, intentional, and genuine. A truly unique and exceptionally motivated young man bringing some much love and abundance to his community.
This project moved quickly going from concept to wall like water, fluid. After a few Sunday Sessions, I took what I had observed; thoughts, feelings, interactions, reflections, spaces... and turned that into a winding staircase mural capturing the spirituality and perspectives of this sacred space.
The mural begins with a tree, Bonsai style, signally the craft and intention of the space. Something completely organic but thoughtfully designed to create something richly expressive and alive. Trees have been seen by our ancestors as bridges to the stars, connecting heaven and earth. The folliage, if you will, are a collage of words pulled from sticky notes papering the walls of the chapel. Echoing the thoughts, intentions, and affirmations of the Sunday Session congregation.
